時は1956年、若干18歳で名門BlueNoteにBLP 1538 Indeed!で華々しいデヴューを飾ったトランペッター、リー・モーガン。その後大ヒットとなったBLP 4157 The Sidewinderをはじめ数々の名演、名盤を残しています。このアルバムは1964年の吹き込みでジャズ・ロック路線のSidewinderから脱し、全てモーガンの自作曲でタイトルの通りあらたな地平を目指したモーガンのストレートでシリアスな吹奏を聴くことができます。メンバーはグラント・グリーン（g）に加えウェイン・ショーター（ts）、ハービー・ハンコック（p）、レジー・ワークマン（b）、ビリー・ヒギンズ（ds）という当時の新主流派ジャズメンの影響もあるのか中でもMelancholeeでのハンコック、ショーターのソロなど、通常のハード・バップとは違うフレッシュな感覚のパフォーマンスを展開しています。

Liberty時代1966年のリプレス盤だと思われますが、ジャケットは経年劣化で擦れ、黄ばみ、汚れ、背、角傷み、裏面に書き込みがあります（写真8〜10枚目参照）。盤はB面に数カ所細かな擦り傷があり1曲目で所々小さくチリ・パチノイズ、特にB面2曲目半ばで数回、終わりにかけ周回ノイズが入ります（写真11枚目）。それ以外全体的にはほぼ問題なく聴くことができます。音圧が高くあまり気にならないレベルだと思いますが少しでも気にする方はご遠慮ください。こちらを凝視するモーガンのオーラを感じるジャケット、なんといっても圧倒的な迫力あるモノラルのヴァン・ゲルダー・サウンドに魅了されます。なおCSはありません。
